Cowbridge and District Flower Arrangers Club – ‘Sticks and Stems’ Open Evening Weds 5th June 7.30pm Town Hall

The Club meets monthly from September to June each year to enjoy the art of flower arranging. Members enjoy skilled demonstrations of how to arrange flowers and also have some practical sessions as well. The reason for this email is to advertise the club’s annual Open Evening when the general public are encouraged to join the members to experience a skilled arranger at work. All the arrangements are raffled at the end of the evening and any proceeds from the sales table will go to the club’s chosen charity — ”Ty Hafan”.

Exhibition of Paintings by Alexander Gillan – 23rd & 24th May 2013 – Lesser Hall

The exhibition is held in the Lesser Hall, Town Hall, Cowbridge (Council car park at rear).
Doors open at 2.30pm on the Thursday afternoon (23rd. May).

‘I had the pleasure of being invited to view the work of Alexander Gillan, in the Lesser Hall. Behnaz Akhgar opened the exhibition, and her portrait was also on view. The portrait was the only portrait painting in the exhibition, as much of the work on show is Alexander’s experimental style of painting.

The varied styles on show fleeted between minimal abstract expressionism through to symbolism through to abstract landscapes. His use of colour, iridescence and texture is perhaps the standout feature of his work. The variety of styles ranged from swirling brushstrokes, colour blending techniques that were reminiscent of The Impressionists and textural effects akin to Kyffin Williams. The use of accidental and experimental painting made for some interesting effects within the work.

Welsh Hearts – Free life-saving skills course. Bear Hotel Monday 20th May 7.30pm

Become a Live Saver! Welsh Hearts are holding a FREE 1 off training for 2 hours next Monday 20th May. There are 20 spaces on this course. Monday May 20th at The Bear Hotel in Cowbridge at 7.30 to 9.30pm. After the session you will be given a Certificate.

Children 10 years and above are also very welcome to attend with their parents.

You will receive training in vital life-saving skills to deal with emergencies.

Welsh Hearts working with The Welsh Ambulance Service aims to equip people with emergency vital life saving skills and the knowledge and actions that could save a life. Training will be given in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), a first aid technique that is a combination of rescue breaths and chest compression and training on how to use a Defibrillator – A Defibrillator is a life saving machine used to shock a person’s heart back into its normal rhythm after a cardiac arrest.

From Jim Grove – Proposed Cowbridge Community Allotment. Meeting -

We will be meeting on Thursday 16th (this week) at the Duke of Wellington at 6.00 to 7.00pm mainly to meet one another and to discuss next steps in bringing the allotment project in to land.

We are 14 at present and growing and may be looking to form a committee to drive things forward. An early step will be to plan a second meeting, this time on site to look at the ground and maybe plan a work-party.
