Transition Cowbridge is a small but energetic group of people who are working towards enabling our local community to be better placed to thrive over the long term and at the same time be less dependent upon oil.
‘Transition’ is a global movement founded by Rob Hopkins, with literally thousands of towns getting involved in many different countries. Each ‘Transition town’ operates exclusively for the benefit of it’s own local community and Cowbridge is our ‘centre’.
We are here to promote the consumption of locally grown, seasonally available produce. We’re supporting our local businesses, putting more through their tills and keeping our wealth with in our community. We’re also committed to finding better ways to transport people around the locality as well as leaving the planet in a better state than we found it.
In the past, we have organised fun community events such as bucket of potatoes growing competition involving local schools and kids, we’ve raised awareness of environmental issues by showing the film ‘Age of Stupid’, we’ve held litter picking events and developed a small community garden on a piece of wasteland.
Recently, we’ve celebrated success in the rejection of the planning application for test drilling for shale gas exploration in the Llandow business park which has been covered extensively in local and national media, and together with Fairtrade, we’ve danced our socks off at a Ceilidh in the Town Hall.
One of our latest projects is the Community Growing Project in the Old Hall Grounds
The Civic Trust and St Aubin’s nursery have given Transition the patch of land between the nursery and the old town wall to design and transform it into an edible landscape.
This is a great opportunity to come share and learn some skills, be active and meet new people!
Our vision for the piece of land is:
- to demonstrate what people can do in their gardens and encourage the public to grow more
- to use the land to actually grow some edibles to benefit the community
- to make use of it as an educational space
In our implementation, we are using Permaculture principles and mainly perennial plants – if you’d like to find out more,come along and find out!
We hold regular growing days – about every 3 weeks. Each growing day will incorporate either the learning of a new skill or some relevant teaching, such as soil-testing, applying no-dig methods, plant knowledge etc.
So far we have assessed the area, designed the plan and held 3 growing days in which we’ve managed to prepare most of the ground for planting, built our dalik-compost, started laying a path through the patch and arranging the seating area.

- waterproof clothes and sturdy footwear
- hand tools, buckets and gardening gloves (if you have them)
- packed lunch and most importantly – flasks of tea and water
- cookies or cakes to share will also surely be most welcome
