A nice local collaboration sees recipes for using your organic cucumbers from Riverside Market Garden as healthy skin products!
Miriam from Free to Explore Beauty sourced these from the recipes from the Cucumber Growing Association
Uses for your Organic Cucumber
The flesh of the cucumber is mostly water, but also contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and caffeic acid, both of which help soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling–these acids prevent water retention, which may explain why cucumbers applied topically are often helpful for swollen eyes, burns and dermatitis. Cucumbers are a great treat for the skin. They have the same pH as the skin so they help restore the protective acid mantle–they also possess hydrating, nourishing and astringent properties.
- The high water content in cucumbers help to hydrate skin around the eye area, so whenever you’re in need of some eye soothing hydration, don’t overlook the humble cucumber sitting in your fridge.
- Place cucumber in a refrigerator and use when needed to soothe puffy eyes for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Make a soothing bath to help relieve headaches and itchiness or for a cooling summer bath :-To your bath of water, add 2 cupfuls of Epsom salts or bath salts, add one sliced cucumber, and a handful of peppermint leaves. You can even add in your favourite essential oil. Relax for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Make a Cucumber Avocado Face Mask – All Skin Types
½ cup chopped cucumbers, ½ cup chopped avocado, 1 Egg white, 2 tablespoons powered milk
Blend the ingredients together using a blender and apply to face, leave for 30 minutes, then rinse with tepid water.
