MP to open Waitrose Cowbridge
In just a week’s time, the MP for the Vale of Glamorgan Alun Cairns, will officially open Cowbridge’s new Waitrose at 8am on Thursday 1 November. The new shop, Waitrose’s eight in Wales, has created 144 jobs in the local area, with all employees becoming Partners in the John Lewis Partnership.*
“I’m really pleased to welcome Waitrose to Cowbridge and am looking forward to playing a part in opening the store on the 1st November with all the Partners. Since the plans for the new store were announced, many residents have told me how much they are looking forward to enjoying a local Waitrose and the further choice it will provide for shoppers in the area as well as enhancing the vibrancy of Cowbridge.”The branch manager, Rob Waite is also looking forward to becoming part of the local community and has been getting involved by sponsoring the Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival even before the branch has opened.
Rob Waite said:
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the warm reception we have received from local people so far – and that’s even before we’ve opened! Waitrose has wanted to open a shop in Cowbridge for a long time and so I know I speak for the team when I say we cannot wait to really become part of the community.
“We’re looking forward to making a positive impact in the community and as well as creating local jobs and improving people’s shopping choice, I’m really pleased that we’ll be supporting local causes through our Community Matters and Partner Volunteering schemes.
“We have a fantastic team of 144 Partners from the local area who have spent the past few weeks training and are eager to put this into practice and show off our new shop.”
Through its Community Matters scheme the shop will donate £1,000 every month between three local causes as nominated by customers and Partners. Customers receive a green token when they shop which they can put in the box of their cause of choice.
Waitrose Cowbridge has committed to donating £12,000 a year to local causes through its Community Matters scheme and 250 hours of Partners’ time through its Partner Volunteering scheme.
The first three charities to benefit from Community Matters will be Llamau Cymru, South Way Home for the Elderly and NSPCC Bridgend with December’s three causes being The Wallich, Cross Roads Care in the Vale for the Elderly and Salvation Army Bridgend.
Partners will also be offering 250 hours of their time every year to support local causes through the retailer’s Partner Volunteering scheme.
This way Waitrose Cowbridge can ensure it supports causes that are at the heart of the community it serves. Anyone interested in either Partner Volunteering or Community Matters should speak to a member of staff in branch.

As tapas is the most sociable type of eating, we feel it should be the perfect early evening social nibble at the bar with a glass of wine/beer/cocktail to unwind with friends and strangers alike. So we are putting out ‘tapitas’ (essentially small tapas dishes) all along the bar free of charge. This could be anything from a simple bowl of nuts, olives, chorizo or anchovies, through to some of the more elaborate ideas we have in the kitchen, to see what people think of them for future plans etc.
So far it’s only been people who happen to be in the bar who have benefited, but we really think people need to know about it, and it should be a hub of early evening socialising! (excuse the hub pun). (Ed’s note – love the Hub pun!!)
We’re also now taking bookings on Sundays for our fabulous Spanish sharing roasts, as well as our usual menu.
The mid week tapas on the bar is available from 5-7pm, Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri evenings.
