With rich historical roots, a glorious garden has been recreated in the heart of the Vale. Discreetly hidden in the heart of Cowbridge, our Physic Garden is a haven of wonderful peace and tranquility.
It reflects the wide mix of plants, flowers and trees that would have been found in traditional herbal gardens to be used for cooking, dyeing fabrics and, all-importantly, for healing.
Laid out in a formal design, Cowbridge Physic Garden is the labour of love of a number of dedicated volunteers who established the garden within the old 18th century garden of Old Hall, the home of the Edmondes family. Since 2007 the garden has been freely open to the public, and within its splendid high stone walls, it presents a spectacular display of colour, fragrance, texture and fascination. Although relatively small at just ½ acre (0.2ha), garden enthusiasts will love the variety of species that have been included. The planting plan reflects physic gardens from the 17th and 18th centuries, but the result is so much more than a living history lesson. The tranquil atmosphere of a much-loved and nurtured garden is evident at every turn, bed and border.
Come and enjoy the Cowbridge Physic Garden. It is just 12 miles to the west of Cardiff. A short stroll from the High Street, it is opposite Holy Cross Church. Paths are flat, pedestrian access is easy. The garden is open every day except Christmas Day from 10am – 4pm in winter and 10am – 5pm in summer. Entry is free.
